What Is Myotherapy?

Myotherapy is a form of physical therapy based on the principles of western medicine, including anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics. It treats or prevents soft tissue pain and restricted joint movement. Myotherapy was coined in 1970 in America by Bonnie Prudden to describe a specific type of trigger point therapy. Myotherapy treatment can be applied during any injury phase, preventive, corrective, or rehabilitative, to maintain the body tissue, such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments and ensure they are in prime condition. Melbourne Massage and Treatment uses Myotherapy treatment to help you improve your body mobility and strengthen presentation, reducing pain and discomfort.

What Does Myotherapy Achieve & Is It Effective?

Myotherapy has proved efficient for many conditions, like trigger point therapy and/or reducing nerve entrapment due to muscle tensions. After a Myotherapy session, you would be expected to feel more relaxed, have a better range of motion, and feel your joints looser and lighter. This type of treatment is a long-term solution, which renders consistency and planning a core function. In most cases, pain is present in a specific area due to an imbalance along the joint chain, and to ensure that the pain is effectively worked,  3 to 5 regular sessions are recommended. During these sessions, you may get given some corrective exercises, which will play a significant role in your recovery process and should be practiced at home. Myotherapy treats conditions like Sciatica, Carpal Tunnel, Tendinitis, Plantar Fasciitis, and Headaches.

What’s The Difference Between Remedial Massage and Myotherapy?

Myotherapy looks more into joint mobility and myofascial restrictions than Remedial Massage and includes techniques such as Dry Needling. For joint mobility, we refer to the ability of the joint to reach its Range of Motion within the active or passive force. On the other hand, Dry Needling is well-known to be used in Myotherapy treatment, but it serves a specific purpose, which is based on creating micro-tear in the muscle, stimulating the immune response and improving muscle tone.

What Does a Myotherapy Session Look Like?

Consistent amongst all services offered at Melbourne Massage and Treatment, you would be guided through a range of motion (ROM) to evaluate the body conditions before and after each myotherapy session. As per result, along with the ROM, you may experience pain or stretches in the body. It is crucial to advise your myotherapist as soon as possible regarding these sensations or feelings. Knowing the area of pain or distress would help Giovanni understand what muscle group is involved in delivering the uncomfortable feeling. Once the evaluation of the ROM and the muscular scale to balance is completed, Giovanni will provide a treatment plan that will guide you on your recovery journey.

During a Myotherapy Session, you will lie prone, supine or in a side position on a table and undress to underwear and bra. Said so, the client is covered with towel all teh time.

Only the area that gets worked will be safely exposed.

Please attend your session in comfortable attire.
